Liverpool should discover the extent of Fernando Torres's knee injury tomorrow when the Spanish striker undergoes further scans in Barcelona before returning to Merseyside.

Torres has been receiving treatment from Dr Ramón Cugat in Spain this week, having missed Sunday's damaging goalless draw against Fulham with an injury to the same knee that required surgery in January. Dr Cugat has insisted the problem is not serious although scans on Monday failed to identify the cause of the pain that has afflicted the striker in recent weeks.

The Spanish national team are anxiously monitoring the situation ahead of this summer's World Cup. "Until the rest period imposed by the doctor has passed, we will not know the extent of the injury," Fernando Hierro, the Spanish Football Federation's sporting director, said. "I talk to Torres every day and he is optimistic. I am too. Hopefully the problem is due to a knock, because it reduces the risk."

An announcement on the future of the club by the Liverpool co-owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, has been delayed. The Americans were expected to confirm the appointment of the British Airways chairman, Martin Broughton, as independent chairman, Barclays Capital to oversee the search for investment and a six-month refinancing extension with the Royal Bank of Scotland today.

The Liverpool defender Fábio Aurélio, meanwhile, has been offered a contract by Olympiakos. The injury-plagued Brazilian is out of contract at the end of this season.
